Equestrian art, a science of the senses and movement.
Lines, movements and interactions
Horses and drawing have been linked for thousands of years. It was in prehistoric times, with the earliest representations, that we first came across the horse, whose picture was drawn on rock surfaces. The Foz Côa site in northern Portugal is home to some of the finest examples.
Engraved, drawn, painted and sculpted, the horse that has accompanied most human cultures has subsequently been as indispensable materially as it has been erected as a sacred and symbolic being. The history of art offers us countless works featuring the horse.

With the history of horse riding, another link between drawing and the horse appears, that of the understanding and rational construction of movement. Since the 16th century, treatises on the teaching of horsemanship have been accompanied by illustrations. Not only did these add aesthetic value to printed works, but above all they served to complement the explanatory text by providing visual elements that were essential to understanding the complex movements performed on the horse’s back.
In the 20th century, the Portuguese master Nuno Oliveira told his pupils :
« The horse is a compass. He has to draw the figures [geometrics]. The riding arena is a sheet of drawing paper. »
Riding a horse and drawing are two ways of thinking about movement and space.
The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art
Since 1979, the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art has been reviving the principles of 18th and 19th century Portuguese equitation, a practice and teaching of excellence in which horses and riders evolve with a concern for harmonising bodies movements.
In the historic district of Belém, in the heart of the stables and riding arena where riders, horses and grooms work every day, come and soak up the atmosphere of tradition and concentration, ideal for tackling various observation and drawing exercises. The Alter Real Lusitano horses are sure to capture your eyes and your heart!

Sessions
Drawing horses is a way of learning that allows you to progress technically while enjoying an environment full of life. The aim is not for you to become specialist horse illustrators, but rather to use the horse as a living object to tackle different themes and exercises.
Sessions are tailored to your level and expectations.
Different theoretical and practical modules will be offered at each session.
For example :
– Techniques and expressions
– Horse anatomy
– Movement and locomotion
– Light and shadow
– Forms and colours …
The exploration of various forms of expression, formats and tools will be encouraged.
The complementary theoretical approach will most often be shared in a document before each session in order to leave more time for practice during the session.
